Also known as rock salt, sodium chloride is one of the most commonly used
products in ice melt products. This is considered very safe for concrete but
does not melt at temperatures lower than 20 degrees F.
Calcium Chloride: Made from natural brine deposits, calcium chloride is a great chemical used to control dust as well as melt snow and ice. This chemical absorbs all the moisture it holds and will dissolve and spread as it tries to go back to a liquid. This is effective to melt ice and snow below -50 degrees F.
Potassium Chloride: This type of chemical is safe to use around pets, vegetation and plants. The lowest it will melt to is 12 degrees F. This type of chemical comes as off white irregularly shaped crystals that does not chemically attack concrete.
Magnesium Chloride: This type of chemical is considered the cream of crop when it comes to ice melt products. It is environmentally friendly, safe to use around plants, animals and vegetation, safe on concrete, effective prewetting road salt agent and corrodes less on metal surfaces. The lowest temperature that this chemical can reach is 5 degrees F.
